Everything You Want to Know About Geometric Tattoos

There is no denying that tattoos are scintillating, attractive, evocative, and sometimes spiritual. Regardless of what tattoo trends come and go, there are some that seem to endure. For many years, geometric tattoos have captured the hearts of many with their simple yet intricate designs. But what do geometric tattoos mean? Is there some underlying symbolism that you need to know about before you get one inked into your skin?

Here is everything you could ever want to know about geometric tattoos:

What Are Geometric Tattoos?

For the most part, geometric tattoos are what their name implies: tattoos made up of geometric, symmetrical shapes. Although geometric tattoos can be simple, such as a triangle with a line through it, most tattoos that fall into the geometric category are dazzling. Patterns are interwoven and span vast sections of the body. It is not uncommon to see geometric tattoos that progress into sleeves or across someone’s chest or back.

Geometric tattoos usually contain the following shapes:

  • Square
  • Rectangle
  • Circle
  • Oval
  • Line
  • Diamond
  • Triangle
  • Cross

For most people, these shapes are as they seem to be—just shapes. However, shapes mean structure, whether the angles are sharp or soft and curved. When geometric patterns are overlapped or aligned, you get a sense of order within art.

With that in mind, here are some symbolic meanings to common geometric shapes to help you craft a stellar geometric tattoo:

Squares and Rectangles

Squares and rectangles are representative of the number 4, which, in many cultures, is symbolic of something. In Japan, 4 is read as “shi” or “yon.” Interestingly, “shi” translates to “death.”

Visually, squares and rectangles are solid, stable, and earthy. They represent volume and strength. The shape of a square in Hinduism is used to represent order among opposites. Among Native American cultures, a square means a safe, permanent place to stay.

When you think of the word “square,” it is often used to describe a gathering place within the heart of a city.

In China, a square means the ground.

Circle

When you are asked to draw something geometric, the first thing you may think of is a perfect circle. This shape carries with it a lot of meaning, because many sacred things, like the sun and moon, are circular. Furthermore, circles represent wholeness, unity, and completion. For instance, in Zen Buddhism, the circle means perfection and unity. In Christian theology, a circle may represent a halo.

If you prefer mythology, the circle is used for the ouroboros, or the snake eating a snake. Celtic tales use circles when talking about the sun, dragons, and the spirit element. In China, a circle means the heavens.

Triangle

Another commonly seen geometric shape with loads of meaning is the triangle. A triangle is simple by design, thus making it accessible to a multitude of cultures. Think about Judeo-Christian theology, which speaks of the Holy Trinity, or the Son, Father, and Holy Ghost. From an alchemical or spiritual standpoint, the three points of a triangle may mean mind, body, and spirit, or past, present, and future.

Additionally, the direction of the triangle may mean different things.

Triangles pointing up mean:

  • Earth symbols, such as mountains
  • Ascent to Heaven
  • Masculine energies, such as fire and air
  • Stability or a strong foundation

Triangles pointing down mean:

  • Feminine elements, such as water and earth
  • Descent
  • Flow and flux

Should you decide to place triangles point to point, it means harmony and also sexual union.

What Are Sacred Geometry Tattoos?

Aside from regular geometric shapes, there are sacred geometric patterns that are found in nature and within religions. In some theologies or philosophies, placing a sacred geometry on the body can stimulate healing, balance, and over well-being.

That being said, you do not have to worry about your sacred geometry tattoos offending anyone. These tattoos are not attached to any specific belief system. Most often, your tattoo artist will incorporate a sacred pattern into a completely original design that includes other shapes, shading, and dots.

Here are some shapes and patterns that are used in sacred geometry:

The Flower of Life

This pattern is one of the most common in sacred geometry. The flower of life features 19 overlapping circles that are equal in size. When completed, the image looks like a bouquet of proportionate flowers. The symbolic meaning is interconnectedness. The flower of life, being that it is found in many natural materials, is also thought to be a building block of life.

Metatron’s Cube

Metatron’s Cube bears a deep spiritual meaning that is associated with healing, protection, creation, balance, and harmony. To make Metatron’s Cube, you need thirteen interconnected circles. Within the circles are the five Platonic Solids, otherwise known as the tetrahedron, octahedron, hexahedron, icosahedron, and dodecahedron.

Merkaba

The Merkaba in sacred geometry is made using two tetrahedra that intersect in opposite directions. Merkaba stems from the Hebrew word for chariot, but it is also used to describe three energies: light, body, and spirit.

Tree of Life

Some people will recognize the geometric Tree of Life from Kabbalah, or Jewish mysticism. The Tree of Life is a sefirot, or ten numerical entities, meaning “many.” These nodes are connected between seven circles.

Vesica Piscis

Often the start of various other sacred geometric shapes and structures, the vesica piscis is two overlapping circles of equal size.

Seed of Life

When seven circles have been interconnected—always starting with the vesica piscis—the pattern becomes known as the seed of life. This may mean similar things to the flower of life, but it can also be used to represent seven days of creation.

Want to Get a Geometric Tattoo?

As with any tattoo, a geometric tattoo is going to require a professional tattoo artist with a steady hand and possibly some experience in this style. Large or small, geometric tattoos call for symmetry. Nothing can be off-center. Otherwise, it will not look right. That said, geometric tattoos are amazing when used to cover large portions of the body. They do take time to get done, though, so this many not be the best choice for a first tattoo!
